Event: Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest 2003, Dancehall & International Nights
Promoters: Summerfest Productions Ltd.
Date: Thursday, July 24th - Saturday, July 26th
Venue:
Catherine Hall - Main Venue

Tru: Sumfest 2003. Dancehall, Singers, and International night.
Fyah: So rude girl, me being a Sumfest vet now - having gone for the past 4 years, I can tell you the performances keep getting better, it seems the only problem with Sumfest is Sumfest!!!!!
Tru: Ain't that the truth. It was also comforting to know that we weren't the only ones who had a problem with the organization of the concert.
Fyah: I
t's the promoters themselves... what a disaster!!! I guess since dem manage to pull it off every year despite all the confusion and foolishness, it allows dem to treat the 'little' people like sh*t!
Tru: I don't know if they realize dem screwing themselves in the process. Cuz if the press ain't happy, den the reports can't be positive! Although they did get rave reviews from local newspapers. *Sigh* What low standards we've set for ourselves as concert patrons.
Fyah: I know, right??? Even that guy Jason from MTV seh "yow, B, mi nah even ah go give dem a slot, mi a go fully cover Fully Loaded... forget Sumfest!" I found the whole thing one big JOKE!!!! Just goes to show, how much a bunch of middle-aged uptowners know about reggae. It looks like it's all about the $$$.
Tru: Sticky pon Summerfest Productions. Like you said, they're a little too confident in the succe$$ they enjoy annually so they forget the big picture. Anyways the show must go on so let's talk about the stars! Despite several malfunctioned microphones, all the acts I saw managed to pull off good performances.
Fyah: Yeah, remember poor TOK had to switch between two mics for the FOUR of them... RIDICULOUS... C'MON SUMFEST. We don't have enough time to get into the whole hoopla we had to deal wid on the actual night wid the passes, and where we could and could not go, but I will leave it at, if it wasn't for us being determined as hell ya'll wouldn't have seen any pics from the show- period. Anyway I have to tell you though that one performance and ONLY one stood out for the I... you know who I'm talking about girl?!!

Tru: The inimitable ENERGY GOD?!
Fyah: TRUST MI !!!!!!
Tru: Him DONE it... yuh nah lie!
Fyah: Rude girl, I have never felt so thrilled, so proud, so touched... I mean, the man was WICKED!!!!!!! Him was tough last year, but this year, it was a different ting all together, the man tek the title.
Tru: Yeah man... all who never witness dis one missed something major! Elephant was a hard act to follow. Him tear down Sumfest, literally! Jumping all over the place, climbing on the equipment, the dancers, everything was tough!!!
Fyah: Signal de plane, F*ck it up!!!!! When him go out on the camera ramp, the whole crowd mash up!!!!! I have never seen so much bazooka and torches in a crowd like that in my life, at ANY show, I had to wonder if Ele secretly paid dem fi come and support, cuz his fans were there in FULL FORCE!!!! Ele, yuh LARGE!!!!!!! Den de dancer dem, bwoy dah chiney gyal can put down a piece a dancing yuh si!?
Tru: She love it!
Fyah: I Know!!!!!! She's so cute.
Tru: I loved how the audience was so into Ele's performance too. Everybody did a 'go down di flank'!
Fyah: Junko's Japanese peeps were out in dem numbers too!!! God know, I think there were more Japanese there than even Americans, and yuh know dem a sing along to all of the song dem word for word.
Tru: It's the most amazing thing. I love the Japanese dem! Dem stay representin'.

Fyah: Dancehall night was the 'cawkest' mi ever see Sumfest, God KNOW!!! Hopefully that will convince dem uptown promoter dem dat dancehall culture is what these foreigners come yah fa!!! Not no Destiny's Child, IS di Elephant Man dem, the Killas, the Sizzlas!!! Yuh dun know!
Tru: Trust me!! I love Destiny's Child as much as the next guy but International Night could not compare! And the biggest acts on International Night (performance-wise) were dancehall artists. So it goes to show...
Fyah: For real, Beenie, yuh large!!!! Him did wicked eeeeh?
Tru: Trus' mi... Beenie Man done it!
Fyah: and Sean, bwoy him come a long way... thank God for Tanisha Scott (hey girl) and all that choreography. But him still couldn't test Beenie for me still. Beenie just have it naturally, him well gifted!
Tru: But before dat we haffi big up Kartel who did the damn thing!!!!!
Fyah: OH SH*T!!!!! No doubt!!!!! Kartel, mmm mmm mmm baby looks GOOOOOOOD in the full out white - SHARP, he's so tall, love a tall man!!!!
Tru: Inna him suit rude girl, dappa. Shout out to Kartel who got a little write up in Russell Simmons' magazine, "One World". He is the next big thing for real. The lyrical content is just off the hook and the flow... SICK!
Fyah: ...and when Marshall joined him onstage it just tek it a step further, mi did kinda pissed seh we did miss Wayne Marshall's performance,'cause yuh done know Wayne a we bwoy, but when him join Kartel onstage, I was like *phew*..
Tru: Though we missed his performance he did very well with Kartel. Those two have good thing going with their collaborations. I love the new energy in dancehall. It mek it seem like it going to another level and that is very promising. Also big special mention to Bounty Killer who did not wild out on any of his rivals!! He said his thing and didn't overdo it which was great.
Fyah: Yow, Bounty ah move in a positive direction, I thought... "YES! Finally he gets it!" Sumfest is about fun, not warring and tracing, tek dat to Sting. He mentioned that people keep talking about this Alliance ting, and him seh, 'we're just a bunch a DJ that get along, and are friends...
Tru: Definitely. The thing we have to realize is that Jamaicans love scandal. They will take any thing at all- anything- and turn it into something negative.
Fyah:
Whether or not Bounty want to admit it though, the Alliance is a powerful group of artists, so whether dem like it or not dem must have an impact!!!
Tru:
True but I don't think there is a premeditated negative intention to jeopardize the careers of other artists, so all this talk about them trying to eat a nex' man food is pure foolishness... that's what I think.
Fyah:
I don't feel so either. It's good to see DJs get along for a change, cuz God knows we have enough war inna Jamaica. Speaking of which, Sumfest was incident free, aside from a man getting stab up while ELE was performing and the whole Cobra drama. Yuh heard 'bout dat?

Tru: Yeah but I am not really sure if I care about the details of that. Ninja Man needs to stop. Him a get too old fi di clash ting. What amazes me all the time is his ability to draw so much crowd wid not one song on the charts. Him definitely have staying power and di people dem love him. Cobra is in a class by himself. One of di original bad man... don't get it f*cked up!
Fyah:
We can't forget Sizzla girl!!!! Yuh si de picture mi get wid him? Yuh know how much BoBo mi haffi pass through fi get to the man, (all you smutty peeps, it's not like that!!!). But trust me, all dem man deh ah some intimidating rastas, dem militant. And here comes Fyah, de likkle browning, begging a photo op, I thought that was so funny!!! Yuh shoulda see dem faces! I don't think they knew what to expect, but I got my pic, and that made me VERY HAPPY!!! Yuh dun know how mi feel bout Sizzla already.
Tru: You and me both. He's my favorite and he was awesome. The audience knew all the words to his songs. He didn't even have to sing a word!
Fyah:
Him did wicked as usual, but I always think that wid those culture artists, the real entertainment is in watching the flag man dem, like the one wid Bushman, he was stealing the spotlight at times.
Tru: And can you imagine Kolanji performed sans flag man? It was just him and the band.
Fyah: I thought that's unlike Kolanji... tough! Now to Beres, OH MY GOD BERES HAMMOND...
Tru: Unbelievable!!!!!
Fyah: MI COULDA JUST WATCH BERES ONE FOR THE WHOLE NIGHT!!! All the hits, and such a gentleman.
Tru: Don't it? He is just wonderful. Every single tune the man sing was a hit! Old, new... everything! And his back up singers are fab! Big up Auntie Nikki- you were wicked!
Fyah: Nuh wonder Beres had all of the big woman dem, the young girls dem, everybody in the palm of his hand. He coulda had his pick dat night, bwoy. And I loved him bringing out Sista Marcia, who I consider such a queen and one of the few great female reggae performers ever to grace a stage.
Tru: No doubt about it, she is exceptional. Is there anyone we're forgetting before we move into International night?
Fyah: What you thought about Wayne Wonder?
Tru: Wayne Wonder can sing but I think he needs to loosen up. I love his new single though and I know it will be a big hit for him.
Fyah: Yeah, he looks good on paper, but he was a little boring, I didn't feel like he was connecting with the audience, I mean, it was a perfect performance in terms of him doing all the right hits, (and him have a piece of catalogue there) but it lacked heart, yuh know what I mean?
Tru: If by that you mean he was stiff, I do agree.
Fyah: I mean, him have di package, but lack de "oomph". Yeah, I guess that's what I mean if yuh want to break it down like that... let's move on den. Spragga surprised me alot, I know him wicked live, but wid the whole rasta thing I didn't know what to expect and he rocked the place. All when Lady Saw come out, it mash it up!!! What him deh pon anyway?
Tru: Wah him deh pon? Your guess is as good as mine! I cannot judge so I guess that the raunchy lyrics was a tribute to his older days and the more conscious tunes reflect where his head is now.

Fyah: Well, mi nah lie, mi glad him did perform his old tunes, cuz that's the Spragga mi love.
Tru: I know what you mean. Yow! We haffi talk bout BABYCHAM! Okay people, him tear it down! The crowd tear down when Beenie came on with him. They were loving it!!!!
Fyah: Yow, him and Beenie are going places, and Dave Kelly must be loving it, I know alot of DJs hating it at the same time. Beenie represented for him on Dancehall night, and him represent for Beenie on International night, that was wicked.
Tru: I loved that. It was very cool although I had no idea Madhouse and Beenie Man were in the same camp. I guess 2003 is the year for dancehall to become a collective force. What I don't understand is how him nuh buss big yet.
Fyah: Who? Cham? Dave Kelly is coming back quietly, him a jim screachy him way back into his fan's hearts, and when he does I am pretty sure Cham will be his top priority.
Tru: So Dancehall Night was the best. In the immortal words of the emcee "thank you all for solding out Dancehall Night 2003." Hahhahaha. Yes, he said "SOLDING". Anyway, Singers Night was also off the hook and last but not least we haffi deal wid International Night
Fyah: Yah! So on to International Night which by far could not compete with Dancehall Night crowd wise. But there was a good turnout nonetheless. And by then I had already gotten my money's worth from the previous night's performances, so this was all brawta for me now.
Tru: Yeah but who knew that Sumfest's crowd was such a security risk for Destiny's Child? They had the place sealed off on International night. I thought it was some official Member of State visiting the island or something.
Fyah: I know, I hate sh*t like that, I felt like yelling 'GET OVER IT, WE WANT SEAN PAUL, not you!!!!' Oh and by the way, note to Sumfest promoters, next time you advertise the all access passes, you need to make it clear that it's all access until Destiny's child gets here.

Tru: HAHAAHAHA! Trus mi. But you know dem promoter love it... dem love the hype ting!
Fyah: But anyway those are my girls, Beyonce especially, being a Virgo and all... so much love to them, but I do hate that foolishness, too often I see it happen, and by the end of the night they realize, 'hey, I guess we didn't need to shell out for all that extra security'
Tru: Yeah man, Destiny's Child did very well as I expected and Sean Paul is definitely learning how to work the stage and interact with the audience. But Beenie Man was by far the best on International Night in my opinion.
Fyah: Yes, definitely, Beenie is Beenie is Beenie. He kept it yard style. The only ting I never rate wid Sean was de whole bad word ting. That just never mek it. Ah nuh Sean ting dat, it was obvious he was trying to prove something, he even said it... 'dem never charge me fi dis yet, so mi ah go do it tonight,... ' I don't know why all of that was necessary, is like him deh pon dis bad man ting.
Tru: That WAS a bit odd for real. I think this whole profanity law is bull shit though. So what if dem cuss? Big fucking deal.
Fyah: True, but when yuh know there are kids out there is a different story, I mean dat shoulda happen on Dancehall night. That's the adult night, you know alot of families came out to see Sean precisely for that reason, as well as Destiny's Child, they are clean acts usually.
Tru: Oh well... I say is night time... big people time... if one or two "bad" words get cuss- so what? That's just me though... I'm sure there may be something "morally wrong" with my point of view. Don't wanna hear it though!
Fyah: You know what I found funny? Beenie did a bit of cussing too, albeit Jamaican bad words, but him never get charge, could that have been because all the little uptowners who were offended by Sean's bad words, left too soon to hear Beenie? Or is it that it was their Golden Boy cursing the words? Or was it that they never came to see Beenie in the first place?
Tru: Yeah I think most of the acts threw in a little discreet 'bloodclaat' here and there. I don't remember exactly who, but I figure Sean was singled out because of the level him at now and the type of crowd who witnessed it.
Fyah: You hit the nail on the head, I don't want to knock Sean, caw we love him same way, and always will, him large. Cyaan knock a man fi dat, him a do something positive fi Dancehall, and we rate that!
Tru: Well all in all SUMFEST was entertaining, save for the organization of the thing but I guess the patrons didn't experience that. Big up to the artists who put on a great show for us all!!!
Fyah: Sumfest keeps getting better, yuh could see how well all the performers had prepared, like is a very major date on dem calender, and I rate that, it's just all the disorganization man, killed the vibe at times for me.
Tru: Not to mention the microphones that didn't work!!!!!
Fyah: Cyaan tek that shit. As well as the security guards who were clueless as to what band served for what area, I mean, damn, no one ever thought of briefing them beforehand?
Tru: Yeah well like we said, no organization. Let's get outta here girl... PEACE!
Fyah: Likkle more sistren... one love.

ONE LOVE!!!
