Mello Vibes, October 26th - Vox Pop

Well come Friday Night I still didn't know whether to go to Lifestyles or Mello Vibes so I decided to check out the two. The first one I went to was Mello Vibes. As usual I reached about 12:30, saw some of my peeps and chilled for a bit outside. As I was there I saw 'one-bag-a-cris-girl' a pass mi a goh inna di session. Even more astonishing was the fact that I saw "Lifestyles Loyals" going to Mello Vibes! That decided it for me there and then ...no Lifestyles Halloween for me!

It was quite easy to get inside, no hassle at the ticket booth, no hassle at the entrance. In all it took about 2 minutes to buy the ticket and reach inside...very unusual for a big session. And it was big indeed. It was about 1:00 when I entered Mas Camp and it was nearly packed!

Kurt Riley was at the turntables and had people rocking to the tunes of the 80's and early 90's. The mood was mellow...befitting the title of the event. It's unusual for me to see a "cool" session, everybody chilling and everybody dancing ...and I not talking bout no "log on and step pon chi chi man" dancing... I mean di people dem hugging up and rub-ba-dubbing ...strange but beautiful! The only time people got really "hype" was when Kurt (and Arif) draw some early 90's tune like 'Batty Rider', 'Positon' and dem icon tune deh.

After Kurt came Squeeze, and you how how he does it. But at about 2:15 rain came drizzling down. Yuh fi si di ladies dem sramble to shelter dem 'just-duh' hair style dem. Who neva a protect di hair di a protect dem 'expensive' shoes. The situation only got worse when the drizzle turn to some semi-heavy showers. A lot of people left. Nuff man did grieve seh dem girl mek dem goh home cause dem neva haffi protect nuttin like hair or shoes and since Mello Vibes is the ongle session mi eva goh weh more woman did deh deh more dan man... I can bet seh dem did extra vex seh dem did haffi leff.

But even though a lot of people left, more stayed and neva watch di rain. From the attitude of the tolerant you could see that the rain even made it 'nicer' for them... or should I say more mellow. Everything was running good... the bar, the vibes, the "women out of the rain" **smile**...

Until about 3:30 when Squeeze said he was playing the last tune of the night. DI PEOPLE DEM DID GRIEVE!!!!! How come him a turn off di set and wi neva si no police come fi lock it off?? A PURE CUSS di people dem cuss cause di session really was going on GOOOD. Squeeze site safety reasons, saying that he was turning off the set because the place was wet and he didn't want people to get electrocuted by the high voltage wired running around di Mas Camp grounds. But even this reason didn't sit well with the patrons who continued to voice their disgust at the interruption of their fun. And even when the set was finally turned off people still 'mellowed' around, probably hoping Squeeze would change his mind and start playing again. When this didn't happening they began slowly trickling out of the Mas Camp, trying to figure out where they could continue the party..'maybe Lifestyle was still going on...huh?'

So in conclusion Mello Vibes was worth more the $400 I paid to go in. It lived up to its name and was a really cool session. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and you can bet I'll be back next year... yuh si mi.

Spliff out.
