MENTALLY ILL

Tony Matterhorn was born in Kingston 13; it was during his high school days at St. George's College that he was drawn to the sound system business. His father, Don Taylor, was also heavily involved in the music industry so it was almost second nature for Matterhorn. He explains that he used to always hang out at Inner City's base, which was located next door to his own home where he observed the 'runnings' of the sound system.

Blessed with the gift of gab, Matterhorn claims, "I can uplift just about anybody with words." "Time after time in the dance hall I say some things that will just move the crowd, and the response is unbelievable". He admits, "Matterhorn is a hype person, and the more heated I get the more shit comes out… but people love it! They react to it, I have people hooked. I send subliminal messages through my words." He uses his remix special on the 'Bruk Out' riddim- a series of bits and pieces of number one dancehall tracks, punctuated by the phrase "Tony Matterhorn", to show us that there is indeed a method to his madness. Hearing this track over and over automatically makes the listener associate Matterhorn's name with the song no matter what version it is played in.

NUH WEH NUH BETTA DAN YAAD

TM:
Sometimes the people dem scare me. It makes me wonder because when I go away and I come back the love weh dem gimme it mek me mi feel like a mi madda (mother) a love mi! The last encounter that I had with that real love was at Fully Loaded. Mi neva really see nuhbaddy get dat before... I mean thousands of people stan' up in the rain last year after big super star Wyclef a wait pon Matterhorn fi play. Yuh nuh get no much more love than dat. Jamaican people nuh stan' up inna rain fi people. Mi neva see nuhbaddy do dat yet in my history of going to (any local function). So when I see them do that for me…it just mek me feel overjoyed nuh care weh anybody tell me…you couldn't break that…and for that one moment…you can't take that from me.

DANCEHALL PSYCHOLOGIST

"Dat inna mi from pickney days" says Matterhorn when we ask him if he knew that he would have become as successful and as popular as he is today. "People would look on me and say that it's conceited but

I did done see wah woulda gwaan- it was like a vision", he says lighting up another Newport. "I never wished to become rich or whatever I just wished to become very famous so that I could send messages to people. For the record," he explains "I am not a selector, I am not a disc jockey, I am not even an entertainer, I am a dancehall psychologist because when you listen to Matterhorn he takes away your problems temporarily so you just want to listen to him again and again! A nuff people life mi change you just don't know."
