Charli Browne - Shot to Watch
roll up dat On a blistering summer night in the Boogiedown when winter's chill would be welcomed with open arms, the streets are alive with all kinds of activity. Guys coming from the basket ball court, baby mothers decked out in the flyest designer wear, the toothless crack head soliciting funds from anybody willing to finance her next hit, a lonely bum downing what appears to be his 4th bottle of malt liquor, and the suspicious old Latino man peeking through his blinds wondering when the neighbourhood kids will put out the mini fire, sparked because of candles left unattended at the death site of a fallen comrade, are all part of the landscape. Aspiring independent dancehall artist, Charli Browne seems oblivious to his surroundings while smoking a spliff his bredren has carefully rolled. "I'm definitely going to try to make it as an independent artist. I not lookin' a label to sign me. I want to do it like how people like P and Ludacris mek it in this music biz: Work on promoting themselves by themselves not waiting to be discovered!"

so may numbers...

Born in Kingston, this Jamaican export has resided between Ft. Lauderdale and New York for almost ten years. Realizing that he had the lyrical dexterity of a first rate deejay made him use these years to hone his skills. Now he has started to milk his talent. Charli spits knowledge at local sessions and studios in the tri state area and most recently leapt at the chance to go dun South Beach as he relives a few of his pool party appearances this past Memorial weekend. Amid the plethora of artists on the verge it is almost inevitable to get lost in the crowd especially trying to launch a career in NY miles away from the birthplace of dancehall. But, armed with incredible talent and an already impressive catalogue of tunes, we doubt that Charli Brown will go unnoticed.

In his music the hip hop influence resonates clearly through each bar but it is obvious that his style and delivery are firmly rooted in dancehall. "Yow mi inna di streets of hip hop so I gotta rep a little of that in my music but I still manage to keep it YARD". Education and exposure also serve as key influences in the quality of his lyrics and very rarely does he venture into the mundane world of hoes and expensive cars. Yet in all honesty one seldom expects the music to be devoid of these themes as boys will be boys.

In 2002, dancehall has become dominated by a few powerhouses, the major players being Bounty Killer, Capleton, Beenie Man, and Sizzla. Artists on the verge have to struggle to establish themselves in this game. "Is not who you know but rather who know you and respect you at the same time" explains the deejay as he plays one of his tracks for Cleve of the John Shop Family. With this reality in mind Charli Browne is working on a compilation c.d. (for more info link charlibrowne@whaddat.com). This will feature only upcoming artists: his group Sabotage, another crew Star Talent and good friend, Cez. "The people waan hear some new artist now dem tired ah di same ole ish"

For Charli Brown securing his own place in the industry is crucial. He plans to achieve this by focusing on two major objectives: perfecting his craft and getting his name out there no matter what it takes. This is definitely one to watch.
