The Many Moods of Moses cont.

When did you lose your virginity?
I lost my virginity at 10. I could have done it before but I decided to wait. (All of ten years old, that was one hell of a wait, Beenie!)

Did you know what to do at 10?
Yeah man, I knew what to do. I had sex with a 15 year old. When I was 10 I felt I was a man because I was in the business from an early age. When people were around me talking about sex dem neva she "Hey likkle bwoy move from ya so!"

Have you ever faked an orgasm or had a one night stand?
Nah. Mi nah sleep wid a girl unless mi like her. I cyaan jus see a girl and sleep wid her jus' so. Unless is a case where yuh go out there and dat is what yuh definitely deh pon, say for example yuh nuh have sex in about 5 months and yuh know seh yuh haffi release, caw if yuh go next to a stove it a go boom up- in dat case an exception can be made.

Do you fall in love easily?
It's not easy for me to fall in love. Mi have a woman still but I am not at that level yet. I have known her since I was young. I am a serious man. August mi born, so I haffi really know wah me a deal wid before I mek dat step.

You're always on point, what inspires your fashion sense?
My father used to sell clothes, he used to travel abroad to buy clothes so me always have clothes- mi used to it. I had the white shoes, white shirt, white hat! (Laughs). Anyting nuh match mi nuh put on. Me love coordinate and put myself together... I just like attractiveness... a jus me dat.

What is most important to you right now?
The most important thing to me is to see my yutes grow and be successful in whatever they want to do in life. I have seven kids, five girls and 2 two boys. They are my biggest fans! They call me Daddy Beenie Man!

What's your latest project?
Mad People Productions, my new label.

When / why do you surf the net?
I only use it to figure out Pro Tools, that could be any time of the day or night.

What would you be doing if we weren't here?
Smoking this spliff.

Do you think you are what people expect?
No. People always think that I am boas'y, but then when they get to know me they say I'm the nicest guy they ever met. If I was stuck up I'd be in the video light like "Here I am!" But I'm in this business, I'm a superstar, I can't help it.

What's the craziest rumour you've heard about yourself?
I hear seh me is a chi chi man
How do you deal with all the rumours?
I never waste time and energy worrying about what people think. People have a right to think what they want, but not because they think that way it, makes it true. Moses was the man who had the most rumours surrounding his name, yet he was one of the greatest men that ever walked the face of the Earth. What has your schedule been like lately? Work, work and more work.

What time do you get up in the morning?
Right before the sun comes up, like 5 o'clock, then I go back to bed. It don't really mek sense but that's what I do. I can go to sleep like that *boom*, but I don't make it a practice.

What do you do in the day?
I ride my bike a lot, I drive sometimes but there is too much traffic. I have a little scooter downstairs. Before you guys came, I went down to KeeKee to get this weed.

How fast can your scooter go?
It can go up to 140 mph.

What are you doing tonight?
Tonight a Thursday night. I might go to Asylum

Most embarrassing moment?
My most emabarssing moment was my happiest moment- di Mandela boo, National Stadium, April 11, 1991, 6:45pm to be exact! (Remember when he did "Hey green arm ova dere so"- sung to the tune of Pinchers' Bandelero in front of Nelson Mandela at a concert to mark the African leader's first visit to Jamaica after being freed from prison? 'Nuff said.)

Have you ever said anything in the past that you regret?
Yeah, Saying Bounty Killer is my favourite artist in an interview. He is definitely not. He is a good deejay and I listen to his c.d. but him a nuh mi artist.

Favourite artist?
Has been Sizzla from ever since

Dream job?
I wanted to be a mechanic once... fix cars, patch tires, the whole works. I like electronics too, gimme the parts and I can build a computer. I fixed my DSS myself.

Most unique quality?
Being a super star and being able to live my life like a regular person.

Have you ever been robbed?
Yeah in '87. They took some of my gold chains but I got them back. Dem time deh I wasn't laughing wid people. I wasn't an artist, I was a vicious man!

Favourite food?
I love vegetables. I'm not a vegetarian because I don't think that there are any true vegetarians. I don't eat fish, chicken, beef, eggs, I don't drink milk but I eat gluten, a meat substitute. I think if you still miss the taste of meat you're not a true vegetarian. I was born eating only vegetables, my pops used to check our teeth for any likkle string of meat. If he found any we'd be fucked up.

The End.

In closing, Beenie Man’s evolution as an artist is comparable to the development of dancehall music. His early start in the industry, working assiduously to gain mass appeal mirrors the genre’s slow but steady rise to global recognition. After gaining popularity in the nineties, mainstream interest in dancehall waned but today, however, the world’s focus has shifted from Jamaica’s crime rate to the talent of its people, once more. One can only hope that Beenie’s creativity is taken to a higher level in the same way that new life has been breathed into Dancehall music, moving beyond the drama associated with his name to the most positive aspect of his personality, his God given talent.
