STING
2001 :: Part 2

Following
a quick band change, Morgan's Heritage hit the stage.
After performing their international chart topping hits, "Don't
Haffi Dread" and "Down By The River", and bringing up the younger
Morgans, LMS, they were clapped by the bored audience before
finally finishing up their too long for Sting set. A brilliant
performance by both groups, but are they really Sting material?
I mean, Morgans Heritage is a band in themselves. They have
all their own equipment and are used to single handily headlining
shows. However, their set should've been cut down to suit Sting's
roster.
Sizzla
was set to perform next, so there was another band change. When
the crowd started getting restless, I wondered what they were
going to do after Sizzla, when the band had to change yet again!
By this time it was already 4 something in the morning. Elephant
Man was yet to perform and I know everybody just wanted to see
the clash and go home.
Richie
B was emceeing now and he was doing his best to keep the crowd
amused. "All the girls that have on an outfit that cost more
than 16,000 dollars let me see your hands." What kinda ting
dat man? I think we should leave the bling talk to the artists.
Sizzla
Kolongi with di hotta hotta fire! What a way di man have crowd
weak. I hope that every artist makes a resolution
this year to try and hype crowd like Kolongi. He unleashed all
his biggest hits and the crowd never once got tired or bored
of his exciting 45 minute set. Still, I don't understand Sizzla's
mindset. Fi real. What's up with the US$500 leather jacket?
On that note, Frisco Kid brought up Anthony B. He's a magnificent
performer who never fails to charm any audience, here or abroad.
He buns "fire pon Rome" and almost everything else but yet still
his standardized dress consists of Iceberg, Timberlands & Gucci
shades - every time I see him perform anyway. Maybe I'm wrong
for seeing this as contradictory to his lyrics, but that's just
how I feel.
I digress.
Frisco's
performance was fantastic. Like I mentioned, he brought
on Anthony B who graced us with his antics and hits. To everyone's
surprise, Baby Wayne made an appearance as well. He performed
hits from the early nineties as well as a couple new tunes, which
were very well received. To my dismay, he left out "Mama" which
I thought he would have to have run. Ah well. I'm sure we have
all heard the rumours about Baby Wayne being on this drugs and
that drugs, so what is he up to now? Big things for 2002? Guess
we just have to wait and see.
Before
Frisco though, came Elephant Man, the hottest deejay in Y2K1's
second half. One question…What make Elephant Man feel
seh HIM can go on stage and cuss up whole heap a bad word when
every other deejay before him was abiding by Sting's policy of
non-profanity? And not just cuss bad word, but also announce that
HE can cuss because THIS is Sting. It's just not right. It really
isn't.
NB:
Whaddat?Com does NOT agree that hardcore stage shows should be
free of profanity. We feel it would be just as easy to search
for weapons, as it would be to have an 18 and over rating enforced.
It just boggles my mind that you will attend any given event in
Jamaica and see an underage CHILD being served and consuming alcohol,
but yet still no 'claat can cuss on stage???? Isn't 18 the legal
drinking age in Jamaica? LET'S GET REAL! And another thing!! This
2am curfew…it wasn't enforced at Sting, but it was enforced at
Reloaded. Instead of "Out of Many One People", our motto should
be "So It Go Inna Yard".
BACK
TO ELLY.
So, Elephant
Man took it upon himself to ignore the non-profanity rule by unashamedly
throwing cuss words in any and all authorities' faces side stage.
Whatever. To each their own. He lived up to his Sting-given name
of Energy God and tore down the stage. He climbed and jumped and
ranted and raved. Next question..is Elephant man a misogynist?
'Cuz when he brought up Kiva, when he'd had enough of her he just
tossed her to the side like a rag doll. That's nothing new, I
mean, during almost every perfomance I see him do that to some
chick, but why? Anyhow, we cannot argue that Elephant Man has
ripped up the charts and the audiences of 2001 more so than any
other artist. Kudos to him.

The
Finale
Emcee
Nuffy took the mic. It was time for Ninjaman to come on, which
meant it was time for the shit to hit the fan.
Basically,
this is what happened. Ninjaman came on stage in a
ninja suit with the two-toed boots, braid down his back, ninja
sword, and all. Just the pose alone when he came out caused mass
pandemonium in the crowd. Almost immediately, he called for Merciless.
Everybody wants to know what happened why Merciless get it so
bad. Well, I feel it's because he made the crowd wait for ten
minutes while Ninja paced the stage. Mi nuh understand why him
do dat. 'Cuz he won the 2000 clash? I don't know wha' tek him
but by the time he reached on stage the crowd just don't even
want to see him. He came out silent in a black ski mask, black
turban and black trench coat, like some bin Laden mafia.
As
soon as he showed his face, bokkle start fly, and HE KEPT deejaying!!
Aiiee sah. When Ninja reply back to anything he came with, the
crowd mash up. Merciless came up again! He got one forward still,
a nuh lie…a true! Well, maybe a half a forward but anyway, that
was it for his forward.
Ninja
never came off once and Bounty came up when Merciless was side
stage. That was it! The crowd almost jump pon stage
wid dem! Imagine seh Merciless come back on stage when the two
a dem did a work. Him murda himself cuz bokkle start fly once
more. This time, Bounty got really pissed off and Ninja chat bout
di people dem a fling bokkle offa dem owna Jamaican deejay. Bounty
looked like he wanted to murda Merciless for real. Ha! That was
the last we saw of Merciless for the night. But still, everybody
has been talking how Merciless was hiding side stage when Bounty
and Ninja were on stage. I never thought so. It looked to me like
Merciless wanted to perform regardless of the bottles and boos.
He was being very brave how he kept coming back on. The promoters
and bystanders would not allow Merciless back on because of the
mayhem he was causing. Straight.
So
Merciless was out of it, and the stage belonged to Ninja and Bounty.
Bounty addressed Ninja as him Fadda and Ninja embraced Bounty
as his son. When they performed "Bad
Bwoy Lick Shot" together - I would have been quite
content going home cuz that was the wickedest part of the night
for me.
Bounty dealt
with the statements "Betweenie" Man
has been making in regards to his appearance in No Doubt's video
"Hey Baby" (with the naked man). When Bounty asked
the crowd if they've ever seen him hug up a naked man, they responded
with a resounding "NO!". When asked if they ever saw
Beenie hug up Rupaul the crowd responded "YES!" Aaaah
boy. He unleashed his new track about Gwen Stefani becoming his
matey while recording the song for their album Rock Steady.
The Killa and Ninjaman desecrated Merciless for the better part
of their time on stage together and joked about Beenie Man not
being present.
When
Ninja exited the famed Sting podium, Bounty took his time to launch
into an all-out lecture about the state of Dancehall,
deejays fighting down deejays, Lady Cham and all the young artists
he's made into stars. It was 7:30 in the morning, the sun had
taken over as the spotlight from just an hour before, and although
what he had to say was pretty poignant, the crowd was very tired
very ready to go home.
Me
included. One
