Trends Concepts' Infatuation : ATLANTA, GEORGIA : January 18th, 2003
Rest the mouse to see the captions, click to see the full image

Courtesy of Trends' Concepts, the weekend of January 18th was Whaddat?com's first time in Atlanta, Georgia. The air was bone-numbing but the vibes were just right. Trends and (aliases aside) Steve, Lawrence, Debbie, Andre, Rachel and Karen showed me what ATL was all about. This is Trends : 101 - The Review of Infatuation. 101 pictures for your viewing pleasure, and of course the write up - "How to Party like a Yardie in PHATlanta".

From Top: Thursday at 1:30pm.. rushing to get up Tru's Dutty Rock review before packing to get to the airport for my 4pm flight to Atlanta. No problem. 4 marina, 2 jeans, 1 bashment belt should do it. It's warm in Atlanta, right? I'd never been there before but it is after all the Dirty South (yeh, so Ludacris seh). South means warm. Hopped on Yahoo Weather as I was logging off. ZERO DEGREES!!? A whaddat? I left all my winter clothes in Toronto in '99! Aright, find one puffy vest and cut.

En route - Code Red & EssenceSteve seh - a my appleton this?TWO no less!K-Man Herbs manit start already. Matterhorn done.Supahype in his elementYou know you're in Atlanta

Supahype from Code Red was my flying partner and he was waiting at check-in when I arrived at Norman Manley International Airport at cut-off time. Then, dun know, reach Atlanta and ting. Steve and Lawrence met us at the airport with couple jackets but shit, it wasn't THAT cold. I was alright actually, having prepared myself for it - mentally - but Supa... a different ting dat. Man sleep in him jacket and wooly too rass.

First night out we went to a place called Karma for Island Soul. A 3-floor club-type joint Downtown Atlanta. On Thursdays, it's all about Roots, Rock & Reggae, baby. It was bizarre, all the ATLiens bouncing to Buju and Beres. I say that because (if you don't know already) the ATL is not like Miami. By that I mean by the looks of the event and the patrons, I was expecting everybody in there to be - well - a Yardie. Sorry I don't have much to go by apart from that week in Flatbush years ago and a few trips to Florida, but you know in NY & Miami, it's pure Jamaicans and ex-patriots... in Atlanta, they all American. The general look at Karma was locks and Timbs and big jackets - very The Roots. It was cool. Big up my friend deh in the leather designer tam (I recognised him from pics I took of him at Sumfest).

After Island Soul we went to the Peacock club on Martin Luther King Blvd. for Gal Farm. Wooooweee! Dance - straight. I don't know who was spinning but dem sound like dem jump right off the plane into the dance. Not only were they playing all the current Dancehall but it come een like dem lef' JA in '95 and fi dem record collection come with dem and stick pon di turntable dem. Rockers cyaan dun. As for me, I stuck by the pool table all night and got my hustle on until it was time to go back to the hotel. See pics above from Thursday & Friday

Lawx, this review long eeh? Well it was my first time, and if yuh nuh wan' read bout it, see di pics dem deh! So anyway, Friday have di whole day fi kill so it was all about the mall. Nuff respec' to Karen who showed me how to shop properly. Dun know.

Friday night was all about the "More Fiah" show on WRAS 88.5 at Georgia State. Me reppin' Whaddat and Rush & Supahype reppin' Code Red, we confidently made our presence known in the ATL. It was all about Infatuation the next day. Seen.. we soon get to that. Later we tied up the evening with some (more) Appleton, dominoes and Papa John's at Turtle's house. Lovely hosts, if I may add.

Sleep late Saturday? Sure did! It was all about the big bang later why we were there so we rested up and watched shit on TV all day. Braved the now below freezing (very) for some food then got ready. What does this damn town have to offer?

Club Aquarius, baby. At midnight, ETA was 1:30am. I was anxious to leave partly because of the amount of weed smoke di man dem have in my hotel room putting me to sleep and but also because the heater that Supa had on VERY HIGH was driving me insane.

Waggy T. tears it up!

Infatuation was an excellent event. I didn't check a coat, so mi nuh know nuttin bout the coat check people did a complain 'bout, but henyway...

The vibe was live from the second I stepped in! Crazy ATLiens in their winter jackets bouncin to 50 Cent. That weekend was the first I heard "In The Club" - sick! Despite the vibe, the atmosphere was all very new to me so I just chilled in a corner and took it in for bout 15 before scoping the rest of the club. Got the juice flowin - Bacardi. No Appleton *silence*.......... But nuff Respec' to Dre who took care of me that weekend - made sure I was cool wherever we were.

WAGGY T! J-J-Jeeeeezam! Fully dun di place. I haven't been to an event where Waggy T. played since 'bout '93 round there.Waggy T and House Arrest used to play all the time in Jamaica in the early nineties... those were good times... *sigh* EH!?? Ok - Waggy T - Two thumbs up! CODE RED come wid some fire boiling up the Aquarius. I have never seen them in that element before and I - yes I - was impressed. Dem seh the people never too like the Remix dem but by that they meant the Americans not READY fi dem. All Yard man - kickup! Say YES - MAD! Next up was Black Talon. I told them after their set they wouldn't love me after this review but I'm going to take it easy on them seeing as there was nuff Trini in the house. Soca - YUCK! Oldies in Atlanta? Hell no. But they rocked the crowd... they did. Big up Black Talon.

Saw couple people I haven't seen in years! Prendy, Chris Barnett - big up! Apart from Chris breddrin gettin' a little insane on me when I took his pic (which was sorted out... we drank to digital technology), Infatuation was a Whaddat Approved, Stamped and sealed Bashment. I will be back. Large up Debbie (JE) - the Ultimate hostess, Rachel (Rogue), Lawrence (Johno), Steve (Rush), Trendz, Dre, Karen, Code Red Family and a special big up to the gentleman with the white bimma that took me to the airport after the party... thanks man. I know y'all busted your asses to get me on that flight. Much appreciated.

So, in closing, don't forget Orgasm on the 22nd... another Trends Event at Club Legacy on Memorial Drive. Leftside & Esco a go deh deh, seen. Keep the good vibes flowing... Dem say WOW but a WE!
BLESS!! MIC
