The King Gargamel

Worthy of note...
The 22nd Annual Bob Marley Day Festival
Who control it?
Moss Jacobs (original producer) but he includes a couple of different promoters each year.

How did it all begin?
I dunno, but I think it's safe to guess that he was a huge fan of the King (not Elvis) back in the day and that lead to the need to arrange a show for the US West Coast... who knows?! What I DO know is that the shows are now in their 22nd year of existence!!! Which would mean that he started the concerts closely following the Gong's death. Do the math!

Where was it held this year?
There were four days of festivities spread out over 2 weekends. The first 3 were held over the President's Day weekend (Feb.15/16/17th) in Long Beach at the Long Beach Arena, then in San Diego at the World Beat Center. And on the 21st at the Warfield in San Francisco.

Who performed?
You had your boom dandemites like Shaggy, Sean da Paul, The Gargamel- Buju Banton, The king of San Diego- Barrington Levy, and Damian Marley with Marley Clan in tow (Stephen & Julian). Anthony B repping for the roots and culture massive. Other well known acts like the Wailing Souls, Steel Pulse, Sister Carol, George Nooks and of course the obscure ones like Slightly Stoopid and Cannons. NB that just because I'VE never heard of them doesn't mean they aint sh*t.

How much were the tickets?
Well Children under 12+ are free (it's a family day kinda vibe). Otherwise depending on the day you decide to go, the seat you want and day you buy your ticket (presold or at the gate) those prices range from 35 bucks to a maximum of 50 buckaroos. It may seem a little UP there but remember how many acts you get to see, the fact that it's an all day thing (gates open at 12pm, show starts at 1pm) and of course the self proclaimed 'largest International food and craft festival in America'- I don't know 'bout that but everyone has a right stretch the truth in the name of promotion.

Most interesting person you met/ saw there?
That would definitely have to be Tony from No Doubt, not to mention how much finer he is in person.. Ladies, all those pics and videos do Mr. No Doubt- No Justice. I won't tell you what he had to say about the Killa. My lips are sealed, but it wasn't very nice....

For those looking to go next year... a few helpful tips....
If you're not a veteran lover of Reggae music and its many forms then the later you go the better. Otherwise you will be bored out of your mind and the hours will seem like days 'tilthe more familiar acts grace the stage. If you are interested in the culture and all that stuff, go from in the day and visit the many vendors, see the up and coming acts etc. Prepare to get wasted on Heineken (or whoever sponsors it that year). Go for the bongs first (you get that much more). I think it's safe to advise though that after around the 3rd bong or so it's wise to start wheening yourself onto the "smaller" sized cups. Trust me, they aint that small (just enough to trick the eyes). If you planning on getting up close and personal with the artists, you best be getting floor tickets, and if you getting floor tickets...you best be bringing a chair, cushion, or SOMETHING! Otherwise you gonna have to STAND. 12 hours on your feet? I don't think so.....Get your tickets early, you pay less. There's an official hotline and website for the show @ www.bobmarleydayfestival.com it providesartist lineup info, concert dates, ticket outlets, directions to venues etc...So log on to that for any of the nitty gritty details...

So was it worth your while?
Yup, definitely worth my while.

One Love.. Fyah
