Ah
yes...the Final 1991. For those who have missed all of them...bad!
BAD PARTY PERSON. 1991 was the first of its kind. Yes, it
is true. Hard to believe relative unknowns in the promoting
world, Simon & Scott, could make such an impact in such a
short time, and guess what? This last 1991 was the best one
yet..for them (heh heh) and for most of us! I say most of
us because, well, for regular 1991ers, the vibes were different.
Different not necessarily in a negative light but, first of
all, I was in no mood to party, so I just held my corner waiting
patiently for a vibe - a twitch - something! Secondly, the
crowd was different. Much more younger people were there than
at past 1991s - more gun finger - more physical vibe. When
we step in at 1:30, the dancefloor area was empty and crowded
all around, like a 6th grade dance. In a blink of an eye (or
a trip to the bar), the dancefloor ram up and sweat started
to pour. This I was observing from my dark corner sippin'
a marvelous invention called Pepsi (takin it easy on the tired
soul) while Simon graciously did my usual flight of picture
taking (bless, bless Benji).
Well,
Garth - this oh so cool dude who was parrin with his crew
no less than 5 feet in front of us - must have spotted the
rather larger than normal cup in my hand and my vibeless demeanor.
Man started taking Heineken after Heineken out of his crate
of brown & green (Guiness & Heineken) and pratically forcing
them down my throat for the rest of the night! I mean, not
that I was really complaining, but I was trying to be polite
when HE was complaining that I was nursing the beer at 1 bottle
an hour. After 2 hours, I found my vibe. It was hiding under
the table I was about to rest my head on, I guess. Actually,
my vibe woke up after this one guy beside me started pounding
on the door, showing extreme approval for a song that was
playing, and BROKE one of the glass panels! I almost dead
with laugh. Not because of the actual incident, but because
of the poor guy's face post-shattering! He was pretty surprised.
Anyway, I guess that's a you-had-to-have-been-there type of
scenario, so on with the show.
I
happened to really be paying close attention to what Arif
Cooper was playing. This man works absolute wonders on the
turntable. Scott told me that he had cut some specials for
1991 in the week before the party. So we were hearing the
likes of Sean Paul on Stagalag riddim an' dem ting deh (don't
quote me on the specifics). The biggest rail for the night
came when Arif played two Bountys - Gal fi get Wuk on California
Love & Cyaan believe my Eyes on Superthug. Coolio, Wrecks&Effx,
SUPERCAT (of course) and dem tune deh get big hype, but then
tune like Doo Doo Brown and Push It never really get no rail!
I don't understand really, but the music was supreme. All
hail Arif! And just a plug on his behalf - If ever travelling
Air Jamaica, make sure you listen to the Dancehall segment
on AJ Radio. Arif hosts it, and selections are great from
old to new! Yuh dun know, I learnt that in December's Best
of Jamaica issue of Skywritings, where they have the Ten Jamaican
Websites worth visiting. Guess who's in the #1 spot? Hmmmm...
heh heh. As we move along... Syndicate took over from Arif
and finished up the night with some Mirage-esque dance music
and ting. Very nice, very nice.
What
more can I say. A couple people called me to ask me how the
party was. Couple people heard it was an "ALCOHOL INDUCED
VIBE". Interesting. I would agree. Like I said, the vibes
never kick in overall 'til bout 3am and we left at 5 and music
was still bellowing - courtesy of Syndicate..so there you
have it. the vibes were wicked no matter how they were brought
about. Heh heh.
Well done,
gentlemen. I am sad to see you go, but I know you'll be back!!
*wink*
One.
